Thrifty Chic, Anyone?

Last week I rode the country’s biggest rollercoaster without leaving the house.

Watching my retirement account gave me the rocket speeds, hairpin turns and 400-foot plummets of an amusement park ride - with none of the fun. And like a real coaster, I screamed throughout the experience and wanted to throw up afterwards.

Now I’m a good saver, but recent financial headlines have shown me I’m going to have to be an even better one.

So how do you balance beauty and your budget?

Me? I washed my face and slathered on a coat of Freeman’s Cucumber
Facial Peel Off Mask ($3.99 at most drug and discount stores). Then I reached in the cabinet for two Lipton tea bags. I dipped them in hot water a few moments, before plunging them in ice water.

Turning off the financial news, I kicked back and covered my computer-weary eyes with the chilled tea bags. Fifteen minutes later I peeled away the mask and discarded the tea bags.

The results: revitalized skin and refreshed eyes. All for a few cents!

Now it’s your turn. Clue me in on your tips to keep the glamour going in the midst of economic uncertainty.

  1. The only thing that I do to cut beauty costs is that I've stopped going to Sephora and CVS during my lunch breaks! I used to spend so much $$$ on unnecessary things. Great post!

  3. I agree about the rollercoaster. It's like a train wreck, you can't watch, but you can't look away.

My can Not live without beauty item is Epsom salts. It soaks away muscle aches and bloated feelings in 25 minutes. It can be drying to the skin (or maybe that's my Hot water) so I usually splash a couple of drops of Avocado oil in the tub. Mmmn. New woman. (added bonus, the Magnesium makes you sleep very well)

  4. I did beauty probation for several months which was a lifestyle change. Now I can't even splurge without thinking twice!

  5. Yes, like B I now think twice about my spending and I have been doing a pretty good job. Also since I changed my eating habits over the past couple of months my skin looks much better which means fewer products are needed.
    I completely love this post!

  8. Oh dear, I should be using oatmeal as a face mask, but I just bought a hundred dollar plus cream. guess I'll just have to serve Spam for a while to make up for it ...But I DO use baker's sugar mixed with my cleanser to exfoliate, and THAT is sure cheap as far as treatments go!

  10. I do beauty on a budget by going for the CVS brand on my bath products and stretching them till the very end. Also it's winter. No more pedi's for me. Luckily the DH just gave me a certificate as a gift to get me though for a while.

  11. I, too, rode the rollercoaster and had to get off. We don't know what happened to our 401K today. I'm gonna try denial.

I'm glad I came across your blog, I love the name of it!

  12. I use milk that has passed the expiration date (so it needs to be used up) but hasn't turned yet to add to my bath---it really makes your skin softer! I also use olive oil in my hair as a deep moisturizer. You have to shampoo it out really well, but you would be amazed how soft and shiny it makes your hair. I also save money by only applying mascara and some chapstick when I am just around the house so I don't waste make-up on days no one is going to see me anyways!

  14. Smelling something nice, like brewing a pot of jasmine tea, or burning a nice scented candle or merely washing my face and applying moisturizer. I love Lorna's Naturals which smells great and is a bargain.
I also love getting out in nature for a walk, even in the rain, what could be better for my skin and elevated mood.... well, today was a "bounce" back kinda day.
    Positive thoughts, we are Americans!

  17. I forgot about the tea bag trick. I use Shea Butter lotion to give my skin a nice glow. It keeps my skin soft even in the winter.

  18. I decided to cut back on eating out. We usually go out at least 4, maybe 5 times a week, but I've actually turned on the stove.

It's cheaper. The meals are healthier.

Best of all, I could enjoy a guilt-free Saturday in Sephora.

  20. I only buy things that are on sale or I have a coupon for. It cuts down on my impulse buys. I also know I really want something if I still want it when it is on sale:) Everything goes on sale at some point!
